NOTIOS
– WHITE White dry wine – Peloponnese Regional Wine Grape varieties : Moschofilero & Roditis
NOTIOS WHITE Why is that wine called NOTIOS (the Southerner) ? It has not been long since the rest of Europe’ s wine-producing countries believed
that the Southern Mediterranean region did not have much to show for itself in the way of
quality wines, except for a high-degree reds and a few traditional dessert-oriented sweet
wines. How is NOTIOS made ? Two traditional varieties of Greek grapes join their characteristics : Moschofilero, harvested from the Arcadian plateaus, contributes a vibrant, fruity flavor while Roditis, from the Aegialian mountainous slopes provides a smooth quality. Their glorious coupling is both elegant and harmonious. When should NOTIOS be enjoyed ? NOTIOS is the perfect accompaniment to appetizers or light meals, and as always , best enjoyed with a good company of friends. Analytical Standards :
The Greek Wine Guide 1996 Nico Manessis Pale, spritzy, focused, fruity nose, melon, light-framed, beautifully blended, superior table wine. The Sunday Times “What’s in the bottle ?” 1997 Gaia Notios White. Many of Greece’s top new estates, such as Gaia, are working towards organic accreditation. This white from Peloponnese is fresh and crisp, with spicy herbal fruit on the palate. The Guardian Malcom Gluck Gaia Notios White 1998. It has a cheeky flavour, hinting very subtly of raspberry, but there is a crispness on the finish that is also reminiscent of under-ripe ogen melon. It rates 15.5 points (out of 20). Sunday Tribune Wines Of The Week This is way off the map for me but Gaia Notios White 1997 is, apparently, a blend of Roditis and the aromatic Moschofilero. It adds up to a zesty, dry, lively white wine with tingling acidity and a faint but beguiling whiff of acacia blossom and new-mown hay. Absolutely gorgeous, totally unexpected, and a very welcome change to the tyranny of classic white varietals.
