GAIA WINES S.A.

GAIA WINES was founded in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos (Agronomist, University of Thessaloniki) and Yannis Paraskevopoulos (Agronomist, University of Thessaloniki, Natural dioxide (mg/l).D of Oenology, University of Bordeaux II).

Thalassitis, a Santorinian Superior Quality Appellation white wine, inaugurated the company’s first appearance, and quickly won a place in the Greek wine market. The 9,800 numbered bottles of Thalassitis in 1994, rapidly gave rise to more than 80,000 in 1999, all the while maintaining its commitment to quality.

The White Notios (the Southerner) was first launched in 1995, and was immediately accepted by the wine-loving public, due to the excellent value it represented.

1996 was the memorable year in which GAIA WINES incorporated and acquired a private vineyard in Koutsi region of Nemea, along with a perfectly equipped winery of 1500 hl capacity.

Three new products of limited vintage emerged in the following year : The Red Notios, The Retsina Ritinitis and the Rose Agiorgitiko 14-18 h. All three were produced in the new winery from local grapes, and thus accomplished GAIA WINES ‘ goal of contributing substantially to the wine production of Greece.

GAIA’ S wine-cellar

That same year Gaia Estate, a red wine of profound aging Appellation of Origin Nemea of Superior Quality, was born. Created from the grapes of its own vineyard, this wine has swept international awards and has already taken its place as a remarkable product, from a remarkable company.

Gaia Wines (Pelopponese). Unbeknown to the old men of Koutsi village who pass the time sipping gritty coffee and twirling worry beads, their local commune is about to become the centre of a bitter dispute. A local winemaker has proposed to the government that Koutsi should become a special “cru” to help distinguish its “High Nemea” wines from the lesser quality “Lower Nemea” wines. With pride and financial reward at stake, a nasty battle is just around the corner, but the charismatic Yannis Paraskevopoulos is more concerned about garnering international recognition for Nemea than what his neighbours think of him. This ex-Boutari winemaker not only has the sort of energy and vision that Greek wine industry desperately needs but he has that Australian-style “give it a go” ethic that guarantees Gaia wines will always be challenging and innovative. His lavender-scented new-wave Retsina completely confounds stereotypical perceptions of this much-maligned drink.
